Welcome to Westerhaven Academy

How it started

Adelie had been an inhabitant of my brain for quite a while as I decided at Christmas 2012 to finally write down all those stories. First in German, and later in English, as those who wanted to read them didn't speak German. I started far later in the timeline, with a complex plot and multiple story lines as well as a number of characters, until I realised two things: the love story between Nate and Adelie had to happen much earlier and I lacked the skills to do this particular idea justice.

So I took that love story and after two years and several rewrites published it with the title Beginnings. What I hadn't anticipated, though: That I would fall deeply in love with the world of Westerhaven and Adelie's group of friends. It was impossible to leave this setting after just one book.

A decision for a second (and maybe also a third) Westerhaven book was made. Writing it though, took far longer than I expected. Sometimes life has different plans, and writer's block is real. One wedding, a couple of cases of illness in the family and a global pandemic put a serious hamper on my writing. I hope it won't take me another 6 years to write Book #3.

The motivation behind Adelie

I am certainly not the first who starts writing the books she wants to read. But that was the main motivation: I missed books with strong heroines who did cool stuff, who had things under control and loved men because they wanted to. I missed romantic relationships that were based in affection and not just sexual attraction - and were told beyond the becoming a couple part. I missed romantic heroes who are not psychopaths in disguise. And there's simply not much Science Fiction written by women in the first place.

So I invented Adelie, a healthy mix of Pippi Longstockings, Lara Croft, Modesty Blaise and Barbarella. A woman who (most of the time) knows what she wants, does what sie wants and always has a quip ready. I invented Nate, a man who wasn't afraid of such a woman nor his feelings. And I try to write them in a relationship that works as a role model.

Danksagung

Gratitude

The biggest Thank You goes to Tim, who suffered patiently through my earliest writing in English, and for being the best beta reader one could wish for. Thanks also to Jörg, Martina and Shukshata, your love for Beginnings encouraged me greatly to write Book #2. Jenny, Sabrina and Conny - my Hype Women, nothing would be possible without your steady support.
